How it Works
01 · Transcription

Arabic first

Audio is transcribed using Gemini 2.5 Flash, which handles dense Arabic speech well. Groq Whisper runs in parallel for word-level timestamps, over the whole file and again in short overlapping windows so no stretch of the audio is skipped. The outputs are aligned using Needleman-Wunsch sequence matching, so the final transcript carries Gemini's text with Whisper's real audio timing.

02 · Translation

Read as it was said

The transcript is split at breath-pause boundaries rather than fixed word counts. Claude (Sonnet 4.6) translates each segment with the full khutbah in view, so the English reads as the imam intended rather than as a word-for-word substitution. Where the imam quotes a verse or a hadith mid-sentence, the published translation (Sahih International for verses, sunnah.com for hadith) replaces Claude's wording.

03 · Quranic References

Nothing missed

Detection runs in three passes: Claude catches explicit citations ("قال الله تعالى"), a sliding-window scan finds ayahs cited without a signal phrase, and a 4-gram index catches partial recitations the other two miss. Each ayah is matched against the corpus and linked to quran.com. The full verse is shown with the recited part in bold, alongside the Sahih International translation.

04 · Hadith References

Linked to the source

Claude flags the hadith the imam quotes. The Arabic matn is searched on sunnah.com, preferring the collection the imam names ("رواه مسلم"), and a result is only accepted if its wording matches what was said. The link and narrator come from that sunnah.com page, so they are right regardless of numbering differences between hadith databases.

Why This Exists

Every Friday I'd look around the masjid and see non-native Arabic speakers chatting, drifting off, or on their phones during the khutbah. Not because they didn't care, but because they couldn't follow it. The khutbah is for all of us, so I wanted everyone in the room to be able to understand it in full, including the verses and hadith the imam builds it on.

إِذَا قُلْتَ لِصَاحِبِكَ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ أَنْصِتْ. وَالإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ فَقَدْ لَغَوْتَ

“When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act.”

Abu Huraira · Sahih al-Bukhari 934

مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَحْسَنَ الْوُضُوءَ ثُمَّ أَتَى الْجُمُعَةَ فَاسْتَمَعَ وَأَنْصَتَ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْجُمُعَةِ وَزِيَادَةُ ثَلاَثَةِ أَيَّامٍ وَمَنْ مَسَّ الْحَصَى فَقَدْ لَغَا

“He who performed ablution well, then came to Friday prayer, listened (to the sermon), kept silence all (his sins) between that time and the next Friday would be forgiven with three days extra, and he who touched pebbles caused an interruption.”

Abu Huraira · Sahih Muslim 857b

This is the first phase: each khutbah is recorded, transcribed, translated, and published after Jumu'ah. The next phase, and the more important one, is real-time translation during the khutbah itself, so you can follow along in English while the imam is speaking.

I built Khutbah.dev and look after it. Every khutbah here is one I've processed, reviewed, and chosen to publish.

I'm also a hafiz of the Quran, alhamdulillah. Having the Quran memorised is a big part of why the Quranic references here matter to me: when the imam recites a verse, I want every listener to know exactly which verse it is and what it means, in its full context.
